Types of DHW Cylinders

Wall-Mounted DHW Cylinders

DHW Cylinders for Heat Pumps

  • The heating circuit connected to the heat pump
  • The domestic water circuit connected to the mains water supply

Heat is transferred through the coil, allowing cold mains water to be heated efficiently and stored for future use.

How to Select the Right DHW Cylinder for a Heat Pump

Proper cylinder sizing is essential for achieving maximum system efficiency and user comfort.

One of the most important parameters is the surface area of the heat exchanger coil. A larger coil allows greater heat transfer and faster water heating without increasing the heat pump’s power consumption.

As a general guideline, approximately 0.25 m² of heat exchanger surface area should be provided for every 1 kW of heat pump output. Correct sizing helps ensure:
  • Faster hot water recovery
  • Lower electricity consumption

DHW Expansion Vessels

A DHW expansion vessel plays an important role in maintaining stable pressure within the domestic hot water installation.

As water heats up, its volume increases. The expansion vessel absorbs this additional volume, preventing excessive pressure build-up and protecting the system from damage.

Correct selection and installation of the expansion vessel are essential for the safe and reliable operation of the entire heating system.

Types of DHW Expansion Vessels

Open Expansion Vessel

An open expansion vessel provides additional volume for expanding water and helps maintain stable system pressure. Excess water is directed into the vessel whenever thermal expansion occurs.

Overflow Expansion Vessel

An overflow vessel incorporates an overflow pipe that safely removes excess water from the system when pressure rises above the acceptable level. This provides an additional layer of protection for the installation.
